Magnetic Letters DIY...

Well.... it has been a crazy few days.  A lot is changing in my life right now.  Between getting my certification and a new job all in one day, putting in my two weeks notice at my old one, and taking care of my dad (teaching him some new tricks) I've been super busy.

The weekend is coming and I'm visiting some great friends that have 4 little ones.  So I'm not willing to go empty handed.  Being the ever fun "crafty" Auntie I am I had to come up with something adorable to take to them.  So here you have it:

DIY Magnetic Letters

First of all I'm going to give you a list of things needed:

  • Plaster of Paris

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Plastic or Silicone Molds

  • Popsicle Sticks

  • Disposable Bowls
  • Magnets

That's it!  Too good to be true right?

No really folks its that easy.  A piece of advice:  Before you start you might want to put down a newspaper as a working surface so you don't get plaster of paris all over.

Now get your bowls out and line up all the colors that you want.

As you can see I used powdered acrylic paints.  The liquid works just as well.

Scoop some plaster of paris into each bowl.

Now one at a time:  Mix in some cold water, with your trusty popsicle stick, until the plaster is like pancake batter.  Adjust the amount of acrylic paint depending on the desired color and then pour the plaster batter into your silicone mold.

Right when the plaster starts to set up scrape the excess off of the mold with your popsicle stick and place a magnet into the middle of the letter.

Let the plaster dry completely.  You will be tempted to poke at it.... don't do it!  You will end up with little bits and not little letters!  Let it dry!

Oh!  And beware backwards molds!  The letters and numbers will come out funny!!!

Just keep repeating these steps until you have an entire set or two of alphabets.

These are a great gift for both boys and girls. Not to mention a fun project to tackle with the kids!  Happy making everyone!
